Webinar - Understanding the Chinese Communist Party: Lessons for the Free World

Play Video

With the spread of Covid-19 and the dissolution of Hong Kong as a free society, and continuous human rights violations, there are rising concerns about the intentions of the Chinese government. Their increasingly antagonistic approach challenges the values that underpin democracy and undermines the international rules-based order.

For three decades, Western governments have pursued a policy of strategic engagement with China, in the hope that by trading and engaging closely with China, it would open up and move towards democracy over time. If anything, however, China has become more openly authoritarian.

Whether the Chinese government presents themselves as a ‘peaceful riser’ or a ‘wolf warrior’, a ‘gradualist’ or an ‘expansionist’, the fundamental nature of the Chinese Communist Party, and its intention to achieve dominance in the world, has been constant over time. Failure to understand this and misreading their actions will inevitably lead to potentially devastating consequences.

What is the true nature of the CCP and how does it operate? Should UK policy towards China change to safeguard the UK’s values and interests? Significant events like the state-sponsored persecution of millions of Falun Gong adherents and the clampdown on democracy in Hong Kong gives an important insight into the ethos of the CCP.
